Tax on Gifts

For tax return on income tax purposes, generally properties you receive as a gift, bequest, or inheritance are not considered. Even though it’s not considered for income tax purposes, the property may be considered for federal gift tax, federal estate tax, or state gift tax, estate tax, or inheritance tax. All these complications occur because the gift maybe of value that calls for federal tax or because it’s a gift that is inherited.

Although, gift are taxable if it comes under for federal gift tax, federal estate tax, or state gift tax, estate tax, or inheritance tax rules, it need not be included in the tax return if it is a holiday gift from the employer. But, a holiday gift payment may be called a holiday gift by the employer but may still be taxable income which you must report on your tax return if it is in some way related to your past or future services and hence must be reported on your tax return. If a holiday gift is easily exchanged for cash or is a gift as cash itself then it should be filed for you tax return.
